Okay, this is not cool. I was enjoying that cup of coffee, alright!

[The voice on the other end of your Gears comes through before the feed does, or at least it seems to. Then whoever's holding it seems to realize that they're covering the camera with their thumb and a man in a cheap blue suit with spiky hair that looks like it belongs in Tomorrowland is revealed.]

Oh, whoops-- Is this a camera? Nifty. Wonder if I can get my ringtone on this thing, I paid for that.

[Right when he says that he realizes that is not the point, and he coughs into his fist.]

Alright, considering this thing is hooked up to a network, I'm going to assume I'm not the only person who's been sucked away from home. Anybody want to share what's going on? I really, really hate being in the dark. And I really, really want to get home. Or at least get another cup of coffee. I feel like I'm gonna need it.

Starters are typically significantly less dangerous than wild Pokémon, but much like humans, Pokémon have all sorts of different personalities, so they can still be a handful. Especially if it's a large Pokémon.

Oh, yeah, I guess that makes sense.

[How large could it possibly be? ...He probably doesn't really wanna know. Just to be safe, he'll toss the thing a few yards away, ready to jump out of the way if it turns out to be bigger than that somehow.]

[Thankfully, size doesn't seem to be an issue. Getting a faceful of speeding purple ghost and his face licked does.]

Ah, a Gastly! I have the final evolution of that. Ghost Pokémon make wonderful additions to any team!

[Because Ghost Pokémon are the biggest trolls ever, just like Clive...]

Indeed! I'd say you lucked out.

Now, it's crucial that you train your Gastly and obtain other Pokémon as well. I don't know if you're the battling type, but whether you are or not, you need to train your Pokémon as much as you can in order to protect yourself against wild Pokémon and other trainers. Weapons are just about nonexistent here, and if you had any supernatural powers back in your world, you'll find that they've been rendered completely useless.

...Wild Pokémon I understand, but why would I need to protect myself against other trainers?

[Inwardly, he has to wonder how Maya would feel about this place.]

[And now Clive's expression and tone become more serious.]

Because some trainers can be just as dangerous as wild Pokémon, if not even more so. There was actually a very gruesome network post earlier of a young girl being viciously assaulted by another trainer's Pokémon.

What?!

[Well--that's a great argument for protecting himself, but jeez.]

Is she alright?!

I don't know. At the very least, I can say that if she ends up dying, she won't be gone long. I don't know how it's possible, but death isn't permanent here. I've already died here once myself, so I can attest to that.

...How does that work? The dead are dead!

[Ohhhh okay, his brain is just going to break thinking about this. Dealing with homicides all the time is clearly the best way to prepare for a place where people don't stay dead.]

Like I said, I don't know. That's just how it works here.

There's also one more thing I should warn you about. Johto is home to a dangerous group of individuals known as Team Rocket. They mainly steal Pokémon, but their tactics can be very brutal at times, and have managed to cause widespread chaos in the past. You can occasionally spot them in their uniforms, which consist of a mainly black attire with a large red "R" printed on their shirts, but they're typically disguised as regular civilians. Be on your guard at all times.

Why are they trying to steal them, you think? It sounds like Pokémon are everywhere, so stealing them is pointless.

They are, but the fact of the matter is that trained Pokémon are far superior; or at least ones that are owned by highly skilled trainers. They're more powerful, and some will even know attacks that wild Pokémon can't normally learn because they can only be taught through the use of a Move Tutor, or Technical or Hidden Machines. There are also certain Pokémon that can't be found in the wilderness at all, and Team Rocket values rare Pokémon very much.

...I see... That's shameful, but at least it makes sense.

It does, but yes, it is indeed a terrible shame.

And now to more positive things! If you ever feel that the wild Pokémon in the area aren't to your liking, there is a nice little service you can use to obtain Pokémon, called the Breeding Center. It has a very large selection of Pokémon eggs to choose from, which is constantly growing, and some of them even come with special attacks. Newcomers get their first egg for free, so long as it isn't one of the infrequent batches, so I highly encourage you to take advantage of it.

Eggs, huh? Maybe I will, once I can sort all of this out.

Good, good. There's also battling facilities called Gyms located in most of the towns. If you can defeat the Gym Leader, you'll earn that Gym's badge, along with some cash and a Technical Machine. Some Gyms will give out other little prizes, too.

[He pauses for a moment to try and figure out if he left out any other important information, but as far Clive's tired mind is concerned, his job is done. Explaining all this shit is draining, man, and it probably shows.]
