Okay, this is not cool. I was enjoying that cup of coffee, alright!

[The voice on the other end of your Gears comes through before the feed does, or at least it seems to. Then whoever's holding it seems to realize that they're covering the camera with their thumb and a man in a cheap blue suit with spiky hair that looks like it belongs in Tomorrowland is revealed.]

Oh, whoops-- Is this a camera? Nifty. Wonder if I can get my ringtone on this thing, I paid for that.

[Right when he says that he realizes that is not the point, and he coughs into his fist.]

Alright, considering this thing is hooked up to a network, I'm going to assume I'm not the only person who's been sucked away from home. Anybody want to share what's going on? I really, really hate being in the dark. And I really, really want to get home. Or at least get another cup of coffee. I feel like I'm gonna need it.

Well, I've been here for two years, so I know a little! Firstly, no, you can't go back home on your own. No, nobody knows why. Secondly, stay away from the ledges. Don't ask why, just trust me. Hmmm

[He groans and rubs at his face. Oh man, so much for getting back quickly. At least the travel in groups tip makes sense. Especially since it seems like he'll have to walk.]

Ledges...? This place is sounding more and more peculiar.

It's not so bad, really! They don't know how to do a decent Halloween, but I wouldn't hold that against them. It's fairly easy to find work.

And there are the pokemon!

Right, you mentioned that. What's a pokemon?

[He feels like he knew something similar when he was little, but it was probably a Capcom knockoff.]

A Pokemon is the little animal you were given when you arrived! There are hundreds of different ones. It sounds strange, but we're supposed to capture them, train them to fight, and compete with other pokemon trainers. It's not cruel as it sounds, they seem to be hardwired for it.

That...sounds pretty brutal. What happens if they lose?!

Oh, they don't die! Nobody...dies here. It's...strange.

...Everybody dies eventually. Surely there aren't people here that have always been alive.

[You seem oddly disappointed, good sir. Phoenix isn't sure how to take that at all.]

So what, do they just fight until they're knocked out? Or is there some kind of rule they go by?

That's right. That's generally how it goes. There are places called Pokemon Centers that heal them, and people, back to perfect health. But other than just fighting each other, your pokemon also protect you. They're our friends!

[Que the Bambi transition.]

Well, that's...nice of them. I don't really get why they'd want to fight like that in the first place, though. This is all too surreal...

You get used to it though. Somebody once explained to me that this world is from something called a video game. They don't have those where I'm from, but I'd believe it.

Something fictional and strange? Yeah, I'd believe it, too.
